Lyon: "No real logic" behind Franklin All-Australian captaincy

2018-08-30T07:25+10:00

Former Melbourne star Garry Lyon is confused by the logic behind selecting Lance Franklin as captain of the All-Australian team.

While he’s not up in arms about the decision, he wonders why it was made when other choices were there.

“I don’t have an issue with it, I can’t get passionate about it, but the thing about it is, when you look at that team why would you be picking Lance Franklin captain when he hasn’t been captain of anything?” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“There’s no real logic to it apart from the fact that it’s his eighth time.

“Why would you not have Alex Rance as your captain if you’ve gone to the trouble of making him last year as your captain?”

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson believes Shannon Hurn, who was the captain of he and Lyon’s team, should’ve been given the honour.

“Why wouldn’t you put Shannon Hurn as your captain when you’ve got him in the team and he’s an excellent captain?” he said.

Watson went on to play devil’s advocate, explaining the reason behind Buddy’s captaincy.

“The argument for him being captain is he’s been All-Australian eight times and it’s just recognition,” Watson said.

Lyon didn’t agree with that logic, saying: “that’s not the reason you pick captains, is it?”

Putting all of that aside, Watson said what we really should be talking about is Franklin’s incredible feat, joining only Mark Ricciuto, Gary Ablett Jnr and Robert Harvey as eight-time All-Australians.

“What we should be talking about is what an unbelievable achievement that is, to be recognised eight times as one of the best players in the land.”
