Maher: Carlton should not trade pick one

2018-08-29T15:35+10:00

Host of SEN Afternoons and Carlton expert Andy Maher has said if here were the Blues, he would not be trading pick one under any circumstance.

Carlton is expected to be aggressive in the upcoming trade period, looking to top up with players in the 23-27 age bracket.

“If I’m Carlton, I’m not trading pick one,” Maher told SEN Afternoons.

“I can see why (trading it) would make sense, but if I’m Stephen Silvagni, Brendon Bolton, Mark Logiudice and Brad Lloyd, I’m not giving pick one away.

“Talk to me about any other trade you like, but it’s just not happening, not to me.

“Pick one stays where it is I reckon. It has got to be a stupid deal (to consider trading it).”

Maher said he would take the pick to the draft and claim who many believe is the best midfielder in the draft.

“(I’m taking) Sam Walsh with pick one. End of story mate, it’s just done.”

Carlton has been strongly linked to Adelaide forward Mitch McGovern, who has requested a trade out of the club, but Maher would clearly prefer the Blues to work out a deal not involving the number one selection in the 2018 National Draft.
