Bulldogs CEO opens up on Dahlhaus departure

2018-09-05T10:42+10:00

Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains says the club couldn’t have done much more to try and retain the services of Luke Dahlhaus.

It was announced last night Dahlhaus will exercise his rights as an unrestricted free agent this offseason and find a new home.

Contract negotiations hit a snag between the two parties earlier in the year, with the Dogs reportedly unwilling to offer four years instead of three, but Bains says not much more could have been done on their end.

WILL BULLDOGS GET FIRST-ROUND COMPENSATION FOR DAHLHAUS?

“I don’t think we could have (done more to bridge the impasse),” Bains told SEN’s Whateley.

“Ultimately it’s been an amicable parting of ways.

“Luke is obviously a much respected and much loved Bulldogs premiership player, 150-plus games, been a cult hero in some quarters with the club.

“The dialogue between Luke’s management and the club had been positive and amicable the whole way.

“It’s a credit to our guys, Luke and his management, not withstanding that we are parting ways, that the situation has been handled really well across the whole season.”

Bains also said the club understands the free agency climate and how individuals can decide on their future.

“You don’t necessarily expect it but there had obviously been considerable speculation in the last week or two that this was a possibility,” he said.

“I think we are all realistic about free agency and a players entitlement to seek the best deal and home for themselves.”
