Lynch to Tigers “threatens integrity of competition”: Cornes

2018-09-07T09:40+10:00

Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes has slammed Tom Lynch’s ability to join Richmond via free agency, saying the system “threatens the integrity of the competition”.

The Age has reported Lynch has nominated Richmond as his preferred club of choice, after the forward already informed Gold Coast he wants to depart the club.

COULD TIGERS BE SQUEEZED OUT TO ACCOMMODATE THE ARRIVAL OF TOM LYNCH?

“It’s not right and the AFL must act now on this free agency farce,” Cornes told SEN Mornings.

“How the captain of the 17th ranked club can up and leave and join the 2017 premier, a team that finished the top of the ladder again this year and appears certain to win back-to-back flags, is just not right and threatens the integrity of the competition.

“I’m not sure how the Gold Coast will recover. Sure the AFL will hand them a top-five draft pick as compensation but what good will that do? None.

“The AFL Players Association, the players fought hard for free agency and they will argue after serving eight years at a club, that you’ve had no choice of being drafted to, you should have some freedom of where you want to play.

“It’s another example of the AFL Players Association having far too much power.”

However, Cornes did congratulate the Tigers for manoeuvering their books to fit Lynch into their salary cap.

“They got their man,” Cornes said.

“By signing up the Brownlow Medal winning superstar Dustin Martin this time last year, then the 2018 Coleman Medal winner Jack Riewoldt and captain Trent Cotchin this year, somehow they’ve managed to squeeze in another superstar inside their salary cap.

“Congratulations Richmond and if your recent recruits in Dion Prestia, Toby Nankervis and Josh Caddy are anything to go by, Lynch wearing black and yellow will be a resounding success.”
