Why larger goal square could be good idea: Pearce

2018-09-14T07:29+10:00

Daisy Pearce believes the larger goal square could minimise the reward teams receive from kicking a behind.

The AFL’s competition committee recommended a number of game adjustments to the AFL Commission yesterday, one of them being an extended 18-metre goal square.

While there has been fan backlash to that suggestion, Pearce thinks it could be a positive implementation.

AFL COMPETITION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS REVEALED

WILL THE AFL COMMISSION KNOCK BACK LARGER GOAL SQUARE?

“The goal square one I don’t mind because we are the only sport in the world that rewards a behind, a miss,” she told SEN Breakfast.

“You have a shot at goal, you miss…not only do you get a point out of it but the way teams now press, even though the opposition receives the ball and has a kick, you’re in the stronger position to score from there.

“It’s a big reward for missing your shot at goal. This minimises some of that reward by putting a bit more advantage back in the hands of the opposition.

“I think we will just get used to it…that’s what the backlash has been about is that it changes the look of the field.

“I think it will take three weeks until we forget about it.”
