GWS' first quarter effort "terrible" says Watson

2018-09-17T08:11+10:00

Tim Watson has slammed GWS for their first quarter effort in Saturday night’s Semi Final loss to Collingwood.

The Pies kicked three goals to none in the first term, but also kicked six behinds and could have put the game to bed in the opening 30 minutes.

“The Giants were just so disappointing in the first quarter,” Watson told SEN Breakfast.

“That was just terrible in the first quarter playing a final and just not turning up to play like they did.

“In the second quarter that game was completely different when they upped the ante and started to apply some real pressure.”

Garry Lyon added that the Pies dominated the game, but couldn’t work out how to put it on the scoreboard.

“The pressure Collingwood put on them, they couldn’t handle. Out of their back half, it was as bad an exhibition of kicking out of a back half as I’ve ever seen,” Lyon said.

“It was so one-sided, everything was one-sided and then you looked up and the Giants are 10 points behind.”

Lyon believes the difference in the end may have been the efforts from Collingwood’s players returning from injury.

“In the end, Adam Treloar had a fantastic performance, him getting going after missing so much footy was just so significant,” he said.

“Howe had seven possessions in the final quarter as well, there’s two players coming off long breaks that finished strong whereas Toby Greene had two, Brett Deledio had two, Zac Williams had two, Matt De Boer had one.

“Collingwood’s blokes did it, the Giants’ blokes just hit a wall.”

The Pies will now face reigning premiers Richmond on Friday night with a spot in the Grand Final on the line.
