Hands in the back rule could be on way out: McClure

2018-09-17T18:18+10:00

The controversial hands in the back rule could be abolished next season, according to SEN Time On host Sam McClure.

The competition committee made their recommendations to the AFL Commission last week, with a number of rules on the agenda.

McClure has explained how the hands in the back rule could be simplified to the push in the back rule in the future.

WHAT HOCKING AND AFL WANT TO ACHIEVE WITH NEW RULES

“In 2019 in Round 1, I do not believe that hands in the back will be a rule anymore,” McClure told SEN’s Time On.

“You remember hands in the back was brought in after the 2006 season under the leadership of then Chairman of the AFL, Mike Fitzpatrick.

“It’s been a bug bear of many players and fans alike in that 12 years it’s been in place.

“Steve Hocking doesn’t like it, the competition committee do not like it and I think that the AFL Commission when they meet next week will rubber stamp hands in the back no longer being a rule.

“It will revert back to you have to push someone in the back to be a free kick.”

McClure also believes other rules that will be under investigation for tighter interpretation include ruck contests, deliberate out of bounds, contact below the knees, holding the ball and the protected area.
