“Ageism” exists in AFL coaching: Williams

2018-09-19T08:40+10:00

Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams says there is “ageism” in the AFL in regards to coaches receiving second chances.

While recycling coaches is a common theme seen in overseas sports, it hasn’t translated to football, something Williams can’t understand.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“It would be easy to say there is a bit of ageism involved in the whole competition right now,” Williams told SEN Breakfast.

“No one over a certain age gets an opportunity. That certainly doesn’t happen in politics or big business or even the big overseas sporting organisations.

“The AFL is a little different. It’s hard to get in, it’s just how it is.

“To be a premiership coach that’s never got a second opportunity to coach afterwards, it’s always been disappointing for me. That’s the reality of it.”

Williams has been named Werribee’s new coach in the VFL for season 2019.
