Gerard Whateley believes the AFL needs to unlock the full potential of the trade period, enabling clubs and players to have more freedom when switching clubs.
“Having come this far, we need to actually go all in on player movement,” he told SEN’s Whateley.
“The pool of free agents needs to be swelled by lowering the years of service and removing the differentiation between restricted and unrestricted.
“For it to work fully, clubs have to have the right to trade players whose terms are guaranteed, with or without their consent.
“Hypercharge the market to reward the specialty players in demand and give creative and ambitious clubs maximum possibilities to rapidly transform their lists.
“It’s time to lift the restrictions.”
