Newman endorses priority access to struggling clubs

2018-09-20T19:34+10:00

Box Hill Hawks’ coach Chris Newman is in favour of the proposed plan of allowing struggling AFL clubs priority access to the best talent at state level, outside of the draft.

Australian Football Hall of Famer Terry Wallace revealed on SEN Afternoons that the AFL Commission could ratify the proposal as early as next Monday.

BOX HILL COACH SURPRISED AT LACK OF VFL DRAFTEES

"That would be outstanding for some of these players to have that opportunity," Newman told SEN Afternoons.

"The perfect example is Tim Kelly from Geelong, the way he’s been able to impact straight away at senior level, I think that’s the advantage you get from some of these guys who’ve played two-three seasons of VFL football with the bigger bodies.

"You can see the maturity straight away, so quite often some of these guys who get drafted don’t really need the amount of time in an AFL system to be able to hit the ground running.

"They probably need to cope with the pace of the AFL game but in terms of their bodies, they’re usually in pretty good condition.

"The guys that hang around, particularly the guys at Box Hill, they could go and potentially chase some more money playing local footy.

"But a lot of them choose to keep their dream alive and to showcase what they can do to hopefully keep their draft hopes alive."
