Hawks set to announce long term Clarkson extension

2018-10-04T06:27+10:00

Hawthorn will announce a contract extension for Alastair Clarkson in the coming days, according to Garry Lyon.

Clarkson’s relationship with Hawks President Jeff Kennett has long been of interest, but Kennett has been more supportive in his public messaging of the coach this year.

The four-time premiership coach led Hawthorn to an unlikely top-four spot this year, and is set to be rewarded for his efforts.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“I believe in the coming days Hawthorn will announce a long-term recommitment to their coach Alastair Clarkson,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“That’s going to 100 percent happen.”

Lyon also mentioned how Clarkson’s large contract could have an influence on Dylan Shiel’s future.

The gun GWS midfielder has been linked to a move to the Hawks, with St Kilda and Carlton also chasing his services.

“That may have some bearing on the Dylan Shiel decision,” Lyon said.

“If Dylan Shiel is weighing up money versus success versus being coached by one of the greatest coaches that has ever walked the face of the earth, the fact he would know Alastair Clarkson is going to be on a longer term deal, then he would have to take that into heavy consideration if that’s part of his reasoning.”

Clarkson has been Hawthorn’s coach since 2005.
