Slater opens up on his decision to join St Kilda

2018-10-11T11:25+11:00

NRL star Billy Slater addressed the media today for the first time since announcing his decision to join the St Kilda Football Club in a mentoring type role.

Slater recently announced his retirement from rugby league after Storm’s Grand Final loss to the Roosters and plans to work with the Saints on a part-time basis.

Slater initially never had plans to work in the AFL but after being approached by Simon Lethlean and St Kilda, Slater believed it was a perfect fit.

“Simon approached myself pretty much as soon as I announced my retirement,” said Slater.

“Once my season had finished, we sat down and had a conversation and worked out it was something I was interested in and felt I could bring value to this organisation.

“Living down here in Victoria for the last 16 years, I’ve obviously seen how the AFL operates, and to be involved in an organisation like St Kilda is very exciting for myself.

“I’ve always played rugby league but I think there is a correlation between the two codes that we can certainly draw some parallels and hopefully I can give some value to this organisation and the playing group."

The specifics of Slater’s role are still yet to be determined, but he revealed it will be centred around leadership and professionalism with no plans to be involved in game planning type decisions.

“I think early in the preseason I’ll be listening more than talking, working out what makes the club tick,” said Slater.

“The specifics of my role haven’t been determined, yes it’s around leadership, yes it’s around high standards at training and games, professionalism, preparation.

“I’ll try implement some of the things I’ve picked up over my career, some of the standards, some of the leadership qualities I’ve been able to accumulate, and if that helps this young and exciting group, hopefully I can do that."
