How skipping the gym boosted Craig Parry’s short game

2018-10-14T10:50+11:00

Australian golfing great Craig Parry has admitted making a concerted effort to improve his fitness hindered his short game.

After getting into shape via regular gym sessions, Parry’s explained how his work around the greens suffered as a result and what he did to rectify the problem.

"It (his game) went south really quickly," Parry told Peter Donegan on This Is Your Sporting Life.

“Mate, I got fit, believe it or not, a few times in my career.

“I lost a lot of the feeling in my hands so my chipping was very poor, the distant control on iron shots was very poor as well.

“In the end I ended up going back to not worrying about what’s happening in the gym, just go back to practising, so rather than being in the gym for another hour, I’d go and practice my short game.

“Jason Day a couple of months ago came out and said that he’s going to give away the gym and I thought that’s a good thing for him.”

With 23 career victories under his belt, Parry has always valued his short game.

“My short game got me out of the days when you don’t play as well,” Parry added.

“I always thought about when I was growing up, if you’ve got a good short game - that can get you through when you’re playing poorly.”
