Lions players knew Beams would be returning to Victoria

Brisbane midfielder Hugh McCluggage said the playing group was expecting Dayne Beams to eventually leave the club and return to Victoria.

Beams was traded to Collingwood on the last day of the trade period, despite saying on multiple occasions he would be remaining with the Lions until the end of his contract.

“It was a little bit of a shock to start with,” McCluggage told SEN Breakfast.

“We sort of knew he wanted to eventually go back to Melbourne and that’s where most of his family is, so we were a little bit shocked, but we knew that it was coming.

“When he messaged us and said he was going to go back, there was no hard feelings. We’re understanding of his situation and we all hope he goes well back there.”

Brisbane’s younger players have returned to training, but a certain 34-year-old showed up alongside them.

“Hodgey popped in. He can’t miss out, the old fella.” McCluggage said.

“He doesn’t miss out on much, so he was there and running around and looks as good as ever, he’s come back in really good shape.

“He’s set the standard. It was awesome to see him. Mitch Robinson was there too so a few older boys there.”

McCluggage confirmed Hodge as coach Chris Fagan’s “teacher’s pet”.

“(Fagan) doesn’t mind Hodgey. He often changes his opinion once he asks Hodgey!” he said.
