McEvoy breaks down Melbourne Cup winning ride

2018-11-07T13:27+11:00

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvory has broken down his thought process during his ride on Cross Counter in yesterday’s famous race.

“I was really worried at the 800 or the 2000 when I just missed the scrimmage when that horse broke down, which was terrible to see,” McEvoy told SEN’s Whateley.

“I just missed that and I was able to get into the clear and then the pace was quite slow.

“My horse was a little bit keen and I was thinking to myself all the way along the back straight I’m thinking, I’m a long way back here.

RACING VICTORIA INTEGRITY CHIEF "NOT WORRIED" ABOUT MELBOURNE CUP FATALITIES

“The race started to unfold a little bit and at the 1000 metre mark, I ended up on the back of Yucatan and I thought ok, this is improving, I’m in a better position, I was able to cut through on the inside of horse and gain a little bit of ground around that long turn at Flemington.

“At the 500 I thought, Yucatan, you’re going to take me somewhere and I could see J Mac (jockey James McDonald) pushing away and he wasn’t going anywhere.

“I had to venture out to the outside and get into the clear.

“When I got clear I thought, I know I’m going to finish strong, and I was worried I was too far back still.

“Full credit to the horse, 100 metres later, I thought I got this covered.”
