The positional change the Saints may be forced to make

2018-11-12T09:40+11:00

St Kilda may have to look at throwing Paddy McCartin behind the ball in 2019, according to former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon.

The Saints will go into 2018 with a number of key forward options and Lyon doesn’t think new forward line coach Brett Ratten will want an overly tall group down there.

“They’ll adopt unpredictability, not necessarily a traditional structure,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“They’ll be prepared to throw it around.

“The challenge is he’s got Tim Membrey, Josh Bruce, Josh Battle and he’s got Paddy McCartin. You’re not playing them all in your forward 50.

“Brett Ratten won’t do that.

“I want to see one of those boys tried at centre half-back.”

Lyon believes McCartin is the one to try down back.

“Just try it,” he said.

“I floated it this time last year and spoke about it with Richardson. He thought about it, he said.

“I’d like to find out (if McCartin can play that role).”
