I need to be contributing to earn spot declares Maxwell

2018-11-14T09:32+11:00

Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has conceded he needs to be contributing in a positive way to retain his spot in the ODI side and eventually try and secure an elusive Test position.

Maxwell struggled in the recent ODI series against South Africa, recording scores of 11, 15 and 35, and has explained how he needs to increase his production in order to prove he deserves a spot.

“I need to be bowling, I need to be contributing to the team somehow,” Maxwell told SEN’s Whateley.

“You’re not always going to be gift wrapped positions in that top order with the numbers I have.

“I’ve just got to make sure whatever format I am playing in, whether it be this T20 series or Shield Cricket when I go back, I’ve got to keep working and making big scores and making the most of any opportunity I do get.

“I know they’re not just going to hand it to me and hope I perform.

“It’s going to have to be earned and I’m hoping once this T20 series is done that I can go back and score heavily in the Shield and really show my batting is actually improving and all the work I have put in over the last few months is showing through.”

On his status in the Test side, Maxwell said “it’s probably not at the forefront of my mind at the moment…I’m not probably penciling my name in for that first Test side”.

Maxwell also opened up on the emotions he has felt over recent times, with the constant turmoil amongst the Australian cricket team.

“It’s certainly been a bit of a whirlwind the last six months, there’s been plenty going on, it’s been hard as a player to see all the news come out,” he said.

“As a player internally, to have your team consistently judged and poked at, it’s hard to take at times.”
