Why AFL draft bolter chose footy over cricket

2018-11-14T08:03+11:00

Potential AFL draftee Sam Sturt says the intensity and pace of footy was the key factor in him pursuing a professional career, putting his cricket aspirations on hold.

Sturt wasn’t on the original list of draft invites, but has since appeared on the radar of multiple clubs, with some reports indicating he could go in the top 20 after an impressive combine and TAC Cup campaign.

Sturt has impressed in Victoria’s junior cricket pathways, but has discussed why footy was more attractive to him.

SEN Breakfast with Garry Lyon and Tim Watson can be heard Monday-Friday 6-9am, and you can subscribe to the podcast here.

“It was sort of which game I loved playing the most,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“It probably came down to the pace and the intensity of footy.

“Cricket is a pretty slow sport and you’re really there all day.

“Whereas footy, it is just pretty full on all the time and you have opportunities to get the ball. I just felt like that was more for me.”

Sturt added he sees himself playing as a high half forward or forward pocket in the AFL, while confirming he would be happy to get drafted by an interstate side.
