Why Sydney swooped for former Cat Menzel

2018-11-14T19:39+11:00

Sydney GM of Football Tom Harley says new recruit Dan Menzel will provide another valuable goalkicking option for John Longmire's men next season.

Menzel, 27, secured a move to the Swans as a delisted free agent on a one-year deal after being let go by Geelong.

The age profile of the forward was also a key factor behind Sydney’s swoop for the former Cat, according to Harley.

“We’re hoping goals,” Harley told SEN’s Time On.

“He’s obviously an experienced player both in the sense that he’s been in the system now for a good period of time and that he’s experienced the highs and lows.

“Our list is currently a little shallow in the 24-28-year-olds, so he sits in that bracket which is important.

“He goes at two goals a game; 100 goals in his last 50.

“We’ve got Lance (Franklin) and Sam Reid upfront and then a raft of kids and we think Dan can play a really important role developing the forwards, but also importantly hitting the scoreboard.”

Harley played down concerns surrounding Menzel’s ability to apply defensive pressure inside forward 50.

“When we looked at Dan and were assessing what he would bring to the team, it’s fair to say we looked more at the offensive side of the coin than the defensive side of the coin,” Harley added.

“Like all clubs, we’ll have non-negotiables when it comes to defensive standards and we’ll expect Dan to buy into that.”

Menzel, who has suffered four knee reconstructions throughout his career, played 73 games for the Cats, booting 136 goals.
