“There’s probably some comparisons": Swans academy prospect likened to Franklin

2018-11-15T18:14+11:00

Sydney academy prospect Nick Blakey can see why comparisons have been made between him and champion forward Lance Franklin.

Blakey, the son of 359-game great John, nominated the Swans as his club of choice after being eligible to be drafted to North Melbourne or Brisbane as a father-son.

The 18-year-old says he needs to improve certain aspects of his game to become a complete forward like four-time Coleman Medallist Franklin.

“I suppose we’re both left-footers and both got an arc in our kicking but we’re a bit different,” Blakey told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“Buddy’s one of the greatest one-on-one players and that wouldn’t be my strongest suit, I like to get up the ground and have a run, a leap and mark the ball.

“We’re probably different in that sense but there’s probably some comparisons.”

Blakey already as his eye set on a future role in the Swans’ midfield as he looks set to be drafted to the club in a week's time.

“My best football of late has been as a forward because that’s all I’ve been playing,” Blakey added.

“I love playing midfield; I played all my junior football as a midfielder so in the long-run I hope I can crack into the midfield.

“I do love playing forward so wherever really.”

Blakey is seen as a first-round draft prospect but could be taken with pick 26 by Sydney on draft night.
