A-League aspirants eyeing audacious Kewell move

2018-11-19T17:58+11:00

Team 11 Project Officer Matt Windley has hinted the A-League expansion licence would consider an audacious move to secure Socceroos great Harry Kewell as their inaugural manager.

Kewell’s managerial career suffered a major setback when he was recently sacked by English League 2 side Notts County after just 14 games in charge.

Windley says the former Leeds United and Liverpool winger would be one of numerous candidates the south-east Melbourne bid would contemplate if they were granted an A-League licence.

“Why not Harry Kewell? He’s looking for a job,” Windley told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

When asked whether a move for Kewell is out of the question, Windley replied: “I wouldn’t have thought so, why can’t we talk to all these guys if we get in?

“Vince Grella, who came on board as our ambassador, they were in Socceroos squads together in 2006 and 2010, we might just have to get Vinny to have a word with Harry and see if he’ll come down.”

The announcement of the two new A-League licences is set to be delayed until the 2020/2021 season due to the recent congress saga involving the FFA and other key stakeholders.
