Cornes’ “left field” candidate for Port Adelaide captaincy

2018-11-30T14:20+11:00

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has put forward his unique preference of who should take over as captain of the club.

Travis Boak today stood down from the role after six years as skipper of the Power.

Many suggest 24-year-old Ollie Wines is primed to replace Boak, but Power premiership player and former midfield star Cornes believes three-time Best & Fairest Robbie Gray would be an ideal fit to lead the black, white and teal.

“My suggestion is left field but Robbie Gray is the man,” SEN SA host Cornes told SEN.com.au.

“90 per cent of leadership is showing up on game day and no one epitomises this more than Gray.

“He has overcome countless challenges to clearly be the team’s best player.

“He has a flawless character, plays with courage and flair and is the man to carry the Power forward for the next two seasons until Ollie Wines is ready to take over.”

Speaking at his press conference today, Boak insisted that the club will go through the process of deciding on who becomes the next Port Adelaide skipper as the pre-season period progresses.

“They will be discussions we have throughout the pre-season,” Boak said.

“Discussions had on who is in the leadership group, who’s going to lead that charge. We’ve still got to have those discussions, for sure.”

Gray is not currently in Port Adelaide’s leadership group which is made up of Wines, Brad Ebert, Hamish Hartlett, Tom Jonas, Charlie Dixon and Tom Rockliff.
