With incumbent captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni succumbing to injury, Kohli took the reins for the first time and lead with aplomb, scoring twin tonnes in an incredible Test match at the Adelaide Oval.
Kohli hit 115 in the first innings to become the fourth Indian to score a hundred on Test captaincy debut, before following that up with a masterful second innings knock of 141.
The tourists fell 48 runs short chasing a mammoth fourth innings total of 364 after being 2/242 at one stage.
Despite the 2-0 series defeat, Kohli scored an astonishing 692 runs in eight innings at an average 86.50, including four centuries.
