The AFL has announced a change to its rules for the 2019 season that will see players punished for inappropriately using boot studs.
GWS forward Toby Greene was cleared by the MRO for using his studs to create space in marking contests.
Greene created controversy by extending his leg and pushing off ex-Swans defender Nic Newman to take a mark.

Greene has done this before, using his boot to protect himself from a tackle after receiving a handball.
That time, he copped Luke Dahlhaus in the face, busting him open.
Fines and suspensions will now be handed out if players use their studs inappropriately, which may make Greene and others re-think the way they attack the ball.
Former North Melbourne and Carlton forward Jarrad Waite is another player who used his boot in marking contests, usually sticking it in the back of a player in front of him.
