India lose key duo ahead of Perth test

2018-12-13T15:13+11:00

India has lost key duo Ravi Ashwin and Rohit Sharma for the second test at Optus Stadium.

The Indians took the first test series against Australia, with Ashwin in particular being the key destroyer with the ball.

He took six wickets across the two innings’, but also bowled nearly 90 overs as well.

Ashwin will miss with a left-side abdominal strain, while Sharma has a back injury.

Sharma struggled with the bat, making 38 runs in the first test, but will now leave a hole in the Indian middle order.

The Optus Stadium pitch is expected to be quite bouncy and fast, favouring pace bowling which could open the door for India to unleash an all-pace attack.

Umesh Yadav would likely be the one to replace Ashwin if they go down that path, while spinner Ravindra Jadeja has also been added to the squad.

India squad: Virat Kohli (c), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav
