Hawks captaincy candidate re-signs

2018-12-14T14:53+11:00

Hawthorn midfielder Liam Shiels has re-signed with the club until at least the end of 2022.

Shiels was contracted for another year but has pledged his future to the Hawks by signing on for an additional three years.

The 27-year-old is being touted as a potential candidate to replace Jarryd Roughead as club captain next season.

GM of Football Graham Wright says it was vital to lock the reliable Shiels in on a long-term contract.

“We’re thrilled to have Liam recommit to the club for a further three seasons,” Wright told Hawthorn’s official website.

“He has been a terrific contributor over the past 10 years, and he sets a great example for his teammates both on and off the field.

“Liam is 27 and would have been an unrestricted free agent next year.

“From a club perspective, it was important to lock him into a long-term deal that could see him finish his career here at Hawthorn.”

Taken with pick 38 in the 2008 AFL Draft, Shiels has played 186 for the brown and gold, playing in three premierships and developing into an ultra-consistent performer for Hawks.
