Blues ahead of the curve with draft night trade: Liddle

2018-12-17T10:33+11:00

Carlton CEO Cain Liddle believes his club was ahead of the curve when it comes to the trading of future picks on draft night, expecting it to become "commonplace" over the next few years.

The Blues traded its future first round selection to Adelaide for pick 18 and their future first rounder.

They did so to grab midfielder Liam Stocker , who the club had ranked sixth on their draft board but managed to land with pick 19.

Liddle said the trade isn’t as big a deal as people think, just that it is simply a little ahead of its time in AFL circles.

“We’ve heavily invested into our recruitment and list management team, both Stephen Silvagni and Brad Lloyd have been overseas to get a better understanding of the trading of future picks,” Liddle told SEN Breakfast.

“They were right across how it all operated and had spoken to a number of clubs in advance about opportunities.

“Now I think everyone’s highly excited about the Liam Stocker trade, I think you’ll find in the next year or two the AFL will allow clubs to trade picks two years in advance.

“I think you’ll find this kind of trade will become commonplace. This was the first and it’ll be talked about for a while and then next year when it gets bundled in with a whole heap of other future trades, it’ll sort of be forgotten.

“We had Liam rated really highly and as you saw in the footage, when he was available, we moved heaven and earth to get that player."
