Richmond a "good case study" for Carlton to follow

2018-12-17T16:45+11:00

Carlton CEO Cain Liddle says there is an enormous opportunity for the club to cash in on their hefty supporter base.

Liddle says the Blues could benefit greatly if they are to capitalise by turning support into membership, just as Richmond has done in recent years.

According to AFL numbers, Carlton’s overall supporter base is some 25 percent greater than that of the Tigers who became the first club to tick over 100,000 members during the 2018 season.

“When Brendon Gale got there (to Richmond), he mandated very quickly that they were going to put the member at the centre of that club and they are reaping the rewards of that right now,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“It is a good case study for Carlton.

“In actual fact, Carlton’s supporter base - and this is based on AFL data - is actually about 25% bigger than Richmond’s.

“So that again just highlights what a great job Richmond have been able to do but it highlights the massive opportunity available to Carlton.

“There’s a whole range of reasons (why supporters don’t become members).

“Most of them are our issues at club level. We are setting about fixing them.”

Former Richmond commercial boss Liddle added: “If you want to look at the contrast of Richmond and Carlton…

“Richmond with 100,000 members, if your average member nets you $100, they’ll start this year $4.5 million ahead of Carlton.

“It’s a big gap we need to fill.”
