Australia cleans up Indian tail to claim Perth test

2018-12-18T14:33+11:00

It took no time at all for Australia to put the finishing touches on the Perth test, taking the remaining five wickets before lunch today.

The Aussies have levelled the series 1-1, with the Indian tail putting up no resistance, combining for a paltry two runs.

Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant looked to hold on as long as possible as the final two Indian batsmen, but ultimately a combination of great bowling and a deteriorating pitch meant it was only a matter of time.

Umesh Yadav lasted 23 balls before being caught and bowled by Mitchell Starc. From there, Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah lasted a total of eight balls and didn’t trouble the scorers.

The Aussies ultimately won by 146 runs, with Usman Khawaja’s 72 (213) the standout performance with the bat for the home side.

Nathan Lyon starred with the ball, taking eight wickets, including Virat Kohli yesterday evening.

The second Test kicked off on Friday with the Aussies batting first and posting a healthy first innings total of 326, inspired by an assured 70 from Marcus Harris and solid 50 from fellow opener Aaron Finch.

Travis Head contributed 58 batting at six while Ishant Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowlers with figures of 4/41.

The home side started brilliantly with the ball before Virat Kohli made India’s first innings his own, striking a superb 123, which came to an end by virtue of a controversial dismissal at second slip.

India ended up all out for 283. Off spinner Nathan Lyon was yet again at the forefront for the Australians, taking 5/67.

Tensions began to fray between captains Tim Paine and Kohli, hitting fever pitch in Australia’s second dig which saw Mohammed Shami rip through the home team with a haul of 6/56.

India were set the task of making 286 to win the second Test but they were never in the hunt with Mitchell Starc and Lyon taking three wickets each to dismiss the visitors for just 140.

The two teams will go into Boxing Day tied at one win apiece.
