Former Australian test cricketer Simon O’Donnell has praised current captain Tim Paine, saying he’s one of the best wicketkeepers we’ve ever seen.
Paine has taken 10 catches so far in this series, but also had to deal with the unpredictability of the Perth wicket.
O’Donnell has placed the Tasmanian in rarefied air.
“Watching him keep, particularly in Perth, I didn’t realise how good an athlete he was and how good a wicketkeeper he is,” O’Donnell told SEN Breakfast.
“Some of the catches he’s taken off Nathan Lyon where the ball has changed heights right in front of him and he’s taken them with ease, he’s one of the better keepers we’ve probably had.
“That me be contentious, but I think he’s got Ian Healy covered and I think he’s got Adam Gilchrist covered (as a wicketkeeper).
“He’s a superb wicketkeeper.”
On top of that, O’Donnell is a massive fan of Paine’s work as captain.
“He has grown into this job from nowhere. That transition of Tim Paine has been extraordinary,” he said.
Australia levelled the series 1-1 after downing India in the Perth test yesterday.
