Aussie Edwards says he is a “top-five” NFL punter at his best

Australian Lachlan Edwards believes he is a “top-five” punter in the NFL when he is at his best.

New York’s special teams unit, which Edwards is a vital part of, has been a bright spot in an otherwise forgetful season for the Jets.

In his third NFL season, the Victorian born Edwards doesn’t just feel like an established commodity in the competition – he knows he deserves to be in the upper echelon at his position.

“I definitely feel like I belong…when I’m at my best, I’m a top-five guy I believe,” Edwards told SEN.com.au.

“It’s more about going out there every week and proving that.

“It’s been an up and down road, I came a long way through Texas and got lucky enough to get here and now it’s just about holding onto it as long as I can.”

Edwards has punted 77 times this season, fourth most in the NFL, and ranks in the top 10 in gross punting yards and gross punting average.

The 26-year-old thinks he has had a solid campaign, but acknowledges there is a lot to correct heading into 2019.

“I started pretty strong, I had a couple of games in the middle there which I would like to redo,” Edwards said.

“No excuses but we have had some bad weather games in there with winds over 20 miles an hour and that makes our job a little bit harder as specialists but it’s football, it’s a winter game, an outdoor game.

“I’ve got to do better at controlling myself in those situations.

“Overall, I’ve had an alright year, but definitely have a lot of room for improvement.”
