Mundy sees positives in Fremantle turnover

2019-01-18T16:57+11:00

Fremantle veteran David Mundy has an air of enthusiasm regarding the club’s massive turnover in playing personnel.

This off-season, the Dockers added a handful of draftees while bringing in four new players from rival clubs to help form a vastly new-look list.

A similar Freo rebuild was undertaken about a decade ago which only gives Mundy cause for optimism following an eight-win 2018 season.

“It’s probably the second time that I’ve been through it,” said Monday on SEN’s The Captain’s Run.

“We had a really big draft crop in 2009, so it’s not completely foreign, but in saying that we’ve had about 30 guys turned over in the last three years.

“It’s almost a completely new list. It’s really exciting with the new guys coming in to educate them through the process and see them grow.

“What’s been really beneficial having so many of them come through at the same time is they’re all learning off each other.

“They are growing really quickly and understanding what it takes. In terms of turning that into on-field performance, I don’t think we are too far away.”

33-year-old Mundy also spoke of the evolution of his playing role with the Dockers, moving from an assured half-back to a dominant midfielder and now more of a permanent forward.

“The last few years I’ve morphed into more of a forward/mid hybrid, spending three quarters of my time forward, especially when we’re fit and available,” he added.

“I really enjoyed that last year. It’s enjoyable playing up forward with really good ball movement when the guys are up and about.

“I was able to kick some goals but managed to get myself back in the midfield late in the year.

“New challenges come each year and I just try to meet them head on.”

The Dockers kick off the 2019 AFL season with a home game against North Melbourne on Sunday, March 24.
