Gary Ablett revealed last month that he’s set to spend the majority of the 2019 season up forward and the question turns to how effective that will be.
Herald Sun journalist Sam Edmund has heard a rumour that would worry the rest of the competition.
“There were spies at a recent intraclub where (Ablett) played deep forward and absolutely took them to the cleaners,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.
Garry Lyon confirmed he’d also been told that, saying “I did hear that as well”.
The former Melbourne captain went on to say he’s happy Ablett’s accepted the new role.
“He looks great. He looks fit, he looks happy, his partner’s had a little baby,” Lyon said.
“This time last year, he spoke at our function and said ‘I’m not playing forward, I’m playing midfield, that’s what I’ve told the coach’.
“If he’s got his head around playing forward this year and he’s training there, maybe it’ll be his most enjoyable year of football yet.”
Ablett didn’t play in yesterday’s practice match between Geelong and North Melbourne and said he’s getting himself ready for the JLT Series.
“I didn’t play at all today … body’s feeling good, the plan is to get right for next week so just did a little bit of cross training and I’ll do some running over the next couple of days,” Ablett said.
