Leon Cameron "really confident" in re-signing Kelly and Coniglio

2019-03-14T10:10+11:00

GWS coach Leon Cameron says signing out-of-contract duo Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly is a high priority for the club.

Coniglio and Kelly are yet to sign new contracts, but Cameron would like deals done as soon as possible.

“Josh Kelly and Stephen Coniglio are obviously a massive priority for us,” the Giants coach told SEN’s Whateley.

“The dialogue we’re having with them is fantastic and I’m really confident that that’s going to continue on in a really positive manner.

“But we are in a really good position as a footy club to get a lot of these guys that we’ve obviously prioritised to get done.

“If I put my selfish hat on, I’d want it done before the season starts.”

The club has had retention issues recently, with star players like Will Setterfield, Tom Scully and Dylan Shiel departing GWS last year.

But Cameron still has faith in the club’s long-term plan.

“One thing about our retention is a number of our players that have stayed, they’ve all stayed for the right reasons,” he told Gerard Whateley.

“Some players that we’ve had to lose, it’s no secret because we’ve had some salary cap squeeze and that’s been reported, but over the last three years, we’ve had a clear plan.

“Some players have had to leave our footy club for other opportunities.

"I’m rapt with Jack Steele who’s playing some great footy, I mean you don’t want to lose your Devon Smiths and Adam Treloars but we know the reason why.

“It’s all in preparation for players that are coming out of contract.”

The Giants will come up against the Bombers in Round 1 - a side that includes former star midfield duo Devon Smith and Dylan Shiel.
