"His intention is to play in Round 1": Saints star Steven closing in on return

2019-03-15T13:21+11:00

St Kilda GM of Football Simon Lethlean says Jack Steven is aiming to play in Round 1 after taking part in match simulation at training today.

Steven (mental health), McCartin (concussion), Hannebery (hamstring) and King (knee) have all had interrupted pre-seasons ahead of the club's season opener against Gold Coast next Sunday.

Speaking on The Captains Run, Lethlean went through each of the four Saints and gave further insight into their respective issues.

Jack Steven

"Jack’s training now in match simulation which is when he’s at his best and at his happiest."

"The boys loving having him here, he wants to play, he knows he’s got to tick off with the specialists, doctors and the conditioning guys to get picked.

"His intention is to play in Round 1, so he’s going well. He’s smiling and he has been influential in match simulation today."

Paddy McCartin

"Paddy (McCartin) came in today and I spoke to him just before. He’s still feeling a little bit sketchy following Sunday."

"He was unwell for a couple of days and he’s had a couple of visits from our doctors in the meantime, but we don’t know any more than that just now.

"Previous scenarios like this for Paddy it took at least two or three weeks to clear him to play and train again, so I don’t have expect anything different this time around.

"We’ll take our time based on the symptoms he’s suffering which haven’t been completely identified yet.

"He’ll go through all those processes so there’s no real timeline other than to say he’ll be very unlikely for Round 1."

Dan Hannebery

"Dan’s ok, nothing has changed as so far as what we can say on that one."

"He hasn’t got a tear in his hamstring, he just doesn’t have the complete ability to go at the pace he needs to play.

"The plan in place for him is to have some solid blocks of training to get himself at that level and it’ll be looking more like Rounds 2-4 than Round 1.

"He’s frustrated by the fact that he wants to get out there and prove himself as a Saint, but he’s got some work to do to get there."

Max King

"He’s getting around the track in really good form at the moment and we look forward to him getting out for Sandringham in the early half of the year."

"He’s travelling well."

Alan Richardson’s side face the Suns at Marvel Stadium on March 24.
