Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins would like to see double headers be introduced to open the AFL season in the future.
Carlton and Richmond have owned the season-opening game since 2007 in what has become a traditional fixture under lights at the MCG.
Jenkins questioned whether the Blues and the Tigers are still worthy of kick-starting the new year and floated two potential alternatives he would prefer to see.
“Marketing wise it’s probably a big game,” he told SEN SA Breakfast.
“Carlton might come out and make me look like a complete fool, but I’m not certain that it’s the biggest game we can come up with to open the season.
“In the NFL they play the Super Bowl rematch to start the season, now that would make sense.

“What about a double header? In Round 2 Richmond and Collingwood play each other, I reckon that would be a pretty good way to start off the season.
“Play that at 6pm AEDT time and then go into a double-header and the premiers get to kick-off their season in Perth and start at 8pm.
“What about something like that, instead of top versus bottom from last year.”
Carlton and Richmond open the 2019 season at the MCG tomorrow night with up to 90,000 fans expected to attend the clash.
