Winx bids farewell to home track in style

2019-03-23T15:25+11:00

Saturday's Group 1 George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill went to script.

It always does when Winx is involved.

The darling of the Australian turf won the race for the fourth successive year, and in doing so, Winx made it 32 wins on the spin, 24 G1s, and more than $24 million in prize money.

"When the crowd erupted, I could feel the energy increase in her body. She surged to the line, it was just so exciting," winning jockey Hugh Bowman told Sky Racing.

"I just feel very privileged to be in this position.

"She just excites people so much."

It was the Chris Waller-trained mare's final start at her home track, and Bowman made sure his queen was given the send off she deserved, trotting her down the length of the straight, much to the delight of her loud and loyal fans.

"We haven't been around long enough to see all the great horses before us, but we've heard about them; that's what Winx is doing to the next generation and our generation, she's making people remember a very good sport for all the right reasons," Winx's trainer Chris Waller said.

The curtain will come down on arguably Australia's greatest ever racehorse when Winx contests the $5 million G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on April 13.

Brutal and Dreamforce finished second and third respectively.

Earlier, stablemate The Autumn Sun won his fifth G1 when he claimed a narrow win in the Rosehill Guineas.

The gun colt was made to earn it, though, with New Zealand colt Arrogant knuckling down for the fight.

"I would certainly respect the second horse, because I know how good the first horse is," Waller told Channel 7. "It was always a test, running him over 2000m on a heavy track." The Autumn Sun's connections will meet next week to determine his short and long-term plans.
