What Fremantle did to reinvent themselves in 2019: King

2019-03-25T10:18+11:00

SEN footy expert David King believes Fremantle has reinvented the way their backline operates this season, on the back of their thumping win over North Melbourne.

The Dockers smashed North by 82 points, having 36 shots at goal and King believes their drive off half back is part of how they took control of the game.

“Even when Freo were dominated back between 2012 and 2014 where they made a Grand Final and all those sorts of things and Ross Lyon had this team purring, their ball movement out of the backline was always slow,” King told SEN’s Whateley.

“It was controlled, don’t turn the ball over and he didn’t want to pay a price on the scoreboard.

“He decided this off-season they were going to be an aggressive, counter-attack team out of the back-half and they were going to take territory.

“I hadn’t seen them move the ball like they did yesterday.”

King hit the brakes though, suggesting he wants to see this consistently from Fremantle before declaring them back.

“I don’t know if this is going to be the Fremantle we see this year – I’d say it’ll be someone where between the two, but they set a new record for centre bounce clearance scores,” King said.

“We hope this is the Dockers, but I’m not sure it’s going to be as good as this. Just put a little asterisk on it for the course of the year.”
