Menzel to miss next month after injury setback

2019-03-25T14:56+11:00

Daniel Menzel will have to wait another month to make his Sydney debut after suffering a slight setback in his recovery from a troublesome groin problem.

The forward was working his way back to full fitness after upping the intensity in his training before straining his groin last week.

Menzel, 27, underwent groin surgery last November in an interrupted pre-season after joining the Swans as a delisted free agent.

Sydney coach John Longmire has lamented the injury setback to the former Cat.

"We knew that when they had their operations last year that if we got them back in the first month of the season, that'd be a real bonus," Longmire told reporters.

"We thought 'Menz' was on track to be playing week five even though he had the operation late, so he was ahead of schedule before his tweak last week, and Lance (Franklin) is definitely ahead of where we thought he'd be.

"We can't afford to have too many in that boat of coming in after doing limited amounts of training, so that’s something we'll discuss with Dan when he's closer to playing."

Menzel signed a one-year deal with the Swans after a 73-game 136-goal career with Geelong.
