Wallace “surprised” by non-selection of Roos midfielder

2019-03-25T17:19+11:00

Terry Wallace is bewildered by North Melbourne’s decision to overlook midfielder Paul Ahern for yesterday’s Round 1 match against Fremantle.

Ahern, 22, enjoyed a breakout season for the Kangaroos in 2018, averaging 21.8 disposals and 3.1 clearances per game after suffering two ACL injuries in three years.

His excellent performances earned him a contract extension that ties him to the club until at least the end of 2020.

The Hawthorn great believes North could have done with Ahern's class through the midfield in their disappointing defeat to the Dockers.

“I’ve got to say, I was very surprised that (Paul) Ahern didn’t play,” Wallace told SEN's KB and The Doc.

“I thought what he showed last year and I thought he showed enough in the JLT to be selected.

“He’s classy the way he goes about it, so he’s one I would have been certainly backing up for.”

The former Giant is likely to be in the mix for a recall after North’s 82-point shellacking to the Dockers in their season opener.
