“He’s come in underdone”: Lyon calls May’s professionalism into question

2019-04-02T09:35+11:00

Garry Lyon has questioned the professionalism of prized Melbourne recruit Steven May.

May, 27, has had an interrupted start to the season, suffering a hamstring injury in February before copping a one-week ban for engaging in rough conduct against Brisbane in JLT2.

The former Sun subsequently missed Round 1 and then picked up a groin injury during his debut appearance against Geelong, ruling him out of Friday night’s game against Essendon.

“Steven May has got a little bit of explaining to do for mine,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“Steven May has come to a new club on big money; a big sacrifice for Melbourne to get him there. They offloaded Jesse Hogan who was a huge investment.”

When asked how the defender turned up to pre-season, Lyon replied: “By his own admission, not in the best shape.

“He said he was adjusting to the training standards of the Melbourne Football Club and then proceeded to run last in the time trial.

“He now has a hamstring injury followed up by a groin injury. If he doesn’t turn up for the first training session of the pre-season of 2020 in absolutely ripping-cut nick, then Melbourne supporters will have every right to be disappointed in him and his professionalism.

“He’s come in underdone, hasn’t got the work in, he’s done a hamstring and now he’s done a groin. It’s soft tissue on the back of soft tissue.

“He needs to come in next year with his skinfolds looking as sharp as they’ve ever been, his running times as good as they’ve ever been so he can say that he won’t ever be surprised about the training standards of an AFL club ever again.”

May and rebounding defender Kade Kolodjashnij were traded to the Demons with Gold Coast receiving pick No.6 in exchange.
