Star Saint benefiting from positional switch

2019-04-01T15:04+11:00

Garry Lyon has hailed the decision from St Kilda coach Alan Richardson to deploy star man Jade Gresham through the midfield.

Gresham, 21, was immense for the Saints in their shock 11-point win over Essendon, collecting 25 disposals, winning five clearances and booting two goals.

The Melbourne great believes the young Saint’s polish and class is better utilised around the football rather than playing as a permanent forward.

“St Kilda’s forward half pressure was fantastic; they turned the footy over and Alan Richardson was prepared to make some changes,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“(Jack) Billings goes higher up the ground and looks polished. (Jade) Gresham was outstanding through the middle – put your best players where it matters.

“Jade Gresham is always going to be a three-goal forward inside 50. He’s gone to the midfield and changing the way the game is resulting in the middle."

Former St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt was also full of praise for Gresham, labelling him as the best player on the club's list.

Selected at pick No.18 in the 2015 AFL Draft, Gresham has booted 79 goals in 64 games in the red, white and black.

St Kilda will look to make it three straight wins when they travel to Perth to face Fremantle on Sunday.
