Multiple Group 1 winner Brave Smash retired to stud

2019-04-04T13:05+11:00

Dual Group 1 winner Brave Smash has been retired following his failure in the Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai last weekend.

The son of Tosen Phantom was purchased from Japan in early 2017 by Australian Bloodstock.

In 17 starts for now-disqualified trainer Darren Weir, Brave Smash registered three wins, including the G1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and G1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) in 2018.

"That's a buzz, it really is," Australian Bloodstock's Jamie Lovett said after winning the Manikato.

"It was questionable whether he was a G1 six furlong horse, but not anymore – he's a weapon.

"We're very fortunate to have a horse like this, it's so exciting.

"He's a G1 winner at six furlongs, he's won a Futurity already…"

Following Weir's four-year disqualification in February 2019, Kris Lees took over the training of Brave Smash.

Before his disappointing run in Dubai, Brave Smash ran a close third behind Sunlight and Osborne Bulls in a stellar renewal of the G1 Newmarket Handicap.

The six-year-old entire bows out with five wins and 14 minor placings from 34 starts, for earnings of $3.5 million.

Brave Smash will stand at Aquis Farm's Hunter Valley property for $20,000 (+GST) during the upcoming breeding season.
