Goodwin throws down the gauntlet to Steven May

2019-04-06T12:35+11:00

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has made his thoughts clear when it comes to Steven May fitness coming into this pre-season.

The Demons’ high-profile recruit reportedly didn’t show up in the shape the club wanted and Goodwin laid the gauntlet down to May for next year.

“He certainly won’t be coming back to pre-season in that nick again, that’s for sure,” Goodwin told SEN’s Crunch Time.

However, Goodwin said May has put in the work to get himself into the condition required since then.

“I certainly wasn’t let down, I always felt like we had work to do with Steven. He walked in and knew he had work to do based on the standards we had as a footy club,” he said.

“He’s worked incredibly hard from that point onward to actually get himself into some really good shape.

“I’m probably disappointed for him because he put the work in and he’s now got these niggles to go with it so he’ll get his rewards if he keeps working hard and stays in good shape.”

May is currently set to miss three weeks with a groin injury sustained against Geelong.

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon brought this situation to the public’s attention earlier in the week.

“By (May’s) own admission, (he was) not in the best shape,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast on Tuesday.

“He said he was adjusting to the training standards of the Melbourne Football Club and then proceeded to run last in the time trial.

“He’s come in underdone, hasn’t got the work in, he’s done a hamstring and now he’s done a groin. It’s a soft tissue on the back of a soft tissue.”
