Team Whispers: Premiership Dog returns, Tigers to ring changes

2019-04-11T14:55+10:00

The wave of selection headaches continues on into Round 4.

Here are all the team whispers, not including Thursday night's Sydney v Melbourne clash.

The teams will drop at 6:25pm AEST.

Collingwood

The Magpies have no fresh injury concerns from the loss to West Coast, suggesting the only changes will be made on form and team balance.

Daniel Wells will return in the VFL tomorrow while Will Hoskin-Elliott is still a few weeks away.

Jeremy Howe has been ill this week but is expected to play.

Western Bulldogs

Luke Beveridge says it is likely Jason Johannisen will return from an ankle injury for his first game of the season.

Tom Boyd is not yet ready for AFL action after dealing with back problems over pre-season.

Geelong

The Cats will lose Lachie Henderson for around three weeks with a foot issue. Jack Henry could return to replace Henderson after missing last week with a hamstring.

Mark O’Connor will almost certainly play despite a corked hip.

Tim Kelly should be selected after hurting his ankle late in last Thursday’s win over Adelaide.

GWS Giants

Co-captain Callan Ward will play his first game of the season. He replaces Tommy Sheridan who will be sidelined for up to four weeks with a calf issue.

The often-injured Toby Greene is a chance to play but you can’t imagine too many changes after a dominant win over Richmond.

Essendon

The Bombers should welcome back Cale Hooker from the calf problem that has sidelined him until this weekend.

After kicking five in the VFL, Mitch Brown appears the most likely replacement for Shaun McKernan who will be out for seven weeks with a hamstring. But does Hooker play forward or back?

Matt Dea is also available for selection after missing with a knee.

Could youngster Sam Draper make his debut to work in tandem with Tom Bellchambers?

Joe Daniher is expected back next week.

Brisbane

Zac Bailey makes way because of a hamstring injury which will see him sidelined for up to six weeks.

That will likely be the only forced change to a team that is operating well at 3-0.

Nick Robertson was in the mix last week so could come in for Bailey.

Port Adelaide

Power assistant coach Michael Voss says they are not expecting any changes for their clash with Richmond.

Richmond

The Tigers could have up to six changes for the trip to take on the Power.

Captain Trent Cotchin (hamstring), star midfielder Dustin Martin (suspension) and rebound defender Jayden Short (elbow) will all miss the trip to Adelaide.

Coach Damien Hardwick confirmed that youngster Jack Ross will debut, while Jacob Townsend and Shai Bolton are also in contention for a recall.

Bachar Houli (hamstring) and Josh Caddy (ankle) will have to prove their fitness but Dylan Grimes returns after serving his one-match ban.

Underperforming Tigers potentially on the chopping block are Dan Butler, Brandon Ellis and Oleg Markov.

North Melbourne

The winless Roos are expected to make multiple changes for their must-win match against the Crows.

Jed Anderson (hamstring) will return after missing the opening three rounds. Fellow midfielder Paul Ahern is likely to earn a long overdue recall.

Coach Brad Scott said forward Mason Wood and defender Sam Wright are also in contention.

Adelaide

Ruckman Sam Jacobs (knee) is a major doubt for the match against the Kangaroos, meaning Reilly O’Brien could get another opportunity.

Wingman Paul Seedsman was cleared of an ACL injury but will still be sidelined for a lengthy period.

West Coast

The reigning premiers could regain premiership defender Liam Duggan after missing the Grand Final rematch against Collingwood with knee soreness.

Exciting forward Willie Rioli will commence a running program in his recovery from a stress injury in his foot.

Fremantle

Captain and star midfielder Nat Fyfe was ruled out of the Western Derby after suffering concussion last week against St Kilda.

Ruckman Sean Darcy is a chance to return with coach Ross Lyon hinting at deploying two ruckman against the Eagles.

Gold Coast

After recording back-to-back wins against the Bulldogs, coach Stuart Dew could stick with the same line-up.

Sam Day, Ben King, Will Brodie and Aaron Young all continue to press their claims after strong performances in the NEAFL.

Carlton

Carlton are likely to be bolstered by the return experienced ruckman Matthew Kreuzer.

Director of High-Performance Andrew Russell said Kreuzer (knee) trained strongly and is expected to be available for the match against Gold Coast.

Gun forward Charlie Curnow (knee) was rated an as outside chance with Russell saying he will most likely need another week to recover.

Midfielder Darcy Lang (foot) and ruckman Andrew Phillips (quad) are also a chance to feature this week.

St Kilda

Gun midfielder Jack Steven could be a potential addition after he was managed for the trip to Perth last week.

Ben Long is one of a number of players in the mix for the Saints ahead of their meeting with Hawthorn.

With no new injuries, there are unlikely to be many changes but the likes of Nick Hind, Robbie Young and Doulton Langlands will all be considered.

Hawthorn

Former captain Jarryd Roughead may return from a week out. He was a late change for last Sunday’s clash with North Melbourne with a corked hip when replaced by Dylan Moore who debuted.

Mitch Lewis will also be considered after four goals in the VFL while midfielder Daniel Howe is nearing a return.
