The loss of GWS co-captain Callan Ward will be heavily felt towards the pointy end of the season, according to Essendon great Tim Watson.
Ward and the Giants' worst fears were confirmed after scans revealed he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the rousing four-point win over Geelong.
Watson believes the midfielder’s aggression and strength around the contest will be a big miss for Leon Cameron’s side if they do end up playing finals football.
“The loss of Callan Ward is not going to be felt so much during the home-and-away (season),” he told SEN Breakfast.
“But when you look at all the things that he delivers as a player and the way that he plays: the inside, fearless attack on the ball, the aggression.
“Finals football is all about that tighter game; the game just tightens right up and becomes more contested. Who is built beautifully for that type of finals football?

“They aren’t going to have him at that time of the year – I think it’s a massive loss to that group.”
GWS have begun 2019 in promising fashion, winning three of their opening four games and sit second on the AFL ladder.
