Carlton defender to play first game since 2017

2019-04-16T16:01+10:00

Young Carlton defender Tom Williamson is set to play his first game since 2017 after overcoming a back injury that ruled him out of the 2018 season.

Williamson was one of Carlton’s bright spots across half-back in 2017, playing 15 games in his first season.

Blues Director of High Performance Andrew Russell expects the defender to run out for the Northern Blues this weekend.

“Tom Williamson has had a great training block for the last 6-8 weeks: we’ve been really excited by what he’s been able to produce,” Russell told the Carlton website.

“Not just physically, he’s done a lot of footy preparation work. We expect him to be available this week and start preparing to play AFL.”

After playing a full game in the VFL, ruckman Matthew Kreuzer is expected to be available for senior selection.

“He performed really well in the game, he handled the game really well physically and I expect he’ll be in the selection miss this week for AFL,” Russell said.

Defender Harrison Macreadie is also expected to play his first game of the season in the VFL this weekend.
