"Turn it up": Lyon scoffs at Demons' contract request

2019-04-17T07:45+10:00

Herald Sun journalist Sam Edmund has today reported Melbourne forward Sam Weideman’s management approached the club asking for $650,000 per year.

The 21-year-old comes out of contract at the end of the year and Edmund revealed his management surprised the club asking for such a large deal.

Weideman has played 24 career games including all four this year, kicking five goals and averaging 3.5 marks per game.

He had a breakout month late last year and with the Demons trading Jesse Hogan, they will be relying on him to become the player they invested pick nine in back during the 2015 National Draft.

However, former Demons skipper Garry Lyon doesn’t believe Weideman should be asking for anything near that number.

“$650,000 per year? Turn it up,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“He’s a super talent and those boys of that size have got a head start on some of the other players, but he’s a long way off.

“Brody Mihocek is ahead of Sam Weideman as a football and he’d be on $210,000.

“You incentivise him with a base of whatever it is and if you play to that level consistently, you’ll earn $700,000.”
