Swans star in doubt for crunch clash

2019-04-17T11:46+10:00

Sydney may be without young gun Isaac Heeney for Saturday night's Round 5 match against Richmond at Marvel Stadium.

The 22-year-old copped a knock to his hip during the second term of Sydney's Round 4 loss to Melbourne last Thursday.

He was assisted from the ground by trainers, but returned to play out the game.

Sydney head of football Charlie Gardiner told sydneyswans.com.au: "Isaac took a pretty heavy knock to his hip on Thursday night and was pretty ginger just after it.

"He was able to run out the game, which was a good sign. He pulled up a little bit sore after the game and is being worked on by our medical team.

"He will likely train on Thursday and we hope that he will come up to play for Saturday's game."

Heeney has kicked seven goals and is averaging 20.75 disposals per game in 2019.

In brighter news for the Swans, high-profile recruit Daniel Menzel could return via the NEAFL before the end of the month.

The ex-Cat had surgery on his troublesome groin in December, before suffering a setback March.

"Dan is recovering from a groin injury that he picked up about a month ago," Gardiner said.

"He is getting very close to a return to playing, we think he is about a week away.

"He will do some heavy training in the next week. He will most likely make a return through the NEAFL side."

In nine injury-riddled seasons at Geelong, Menzel played 73 games and kicked 136 goals.

The Cats delisted him at the end of 2018, before the Swans offered him a lifeline.
