Cotchin waxes lyrical on Richmond young guns

2019-04-18T10:35+10:00

Richmond fans can be excited about a pair of promising youngsters.

Tigers captain Trent Cotchin has waxed lyrical about teenagers Jack Ross and Sydney Stack after their impressive AFL debuts in the past two weeks.

Ross had 25 disposals, 10 contested, in last weekend’s spirited win over Port Adelaide which prompted words of praise from his skipper.

“We love to think of him as a man-child at Tigerland,” he said on SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“Fantastic player with regards to the attributes he brings but just a really solid person which is most exciting for us.

“We feel as though he’s only just scratching the surface along with a number of our other younger players as well.

“There’ll be plenty more to see of Rossy.

“The thing that I love most about him, you strip back all the skills that he has, and he just has a big ticker which is what you want to see from your young kids.

“Particularly as captain, you love guys that throw their weight around and have a fair dinkum crack. That’s all you can ask of someone of his age and the cream on top is obviously the skill that he brings to the game as well.

“He looked very mature out there.”

In Round 3, Western Australian product Stack stepped out for his first game in the yellow and black and also stood out with his performance after being overlooked at the 2018 draft.

“He’s an interesting character, Stacky,” Cotchin added.

“He’s got quite a lot of confidence and isn’t afraid of speaking up, unlike a lot of the indigenous boys that first come in to the AFL system.

“He’s just an excitement machine. The way he throws himself at the contest, you can’t train it, you can’t teach it, it’s just inbuilt from a very young age.

“When that’s your starting point and you’ve got all the skill in the world as well, it’s a pretty exciting package.

“It’s just a matter of allowing him to grow within that role and giving him plenty of opportunities as well.”

Both Ross and Stack will be hoping to continue their bright beginnings to life at Richmond when the Tigers host the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.
